My Story

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

                                                                                                                                                       -Ben Franklin

One out of eight women in the U.S. will experience breast cancer during her lifetime. When our youngest was barely a toddler, I became one of those statistics when at the age of thirty-eight  I was diagnosed and treated for Stage I, Grade 1 Invasive Ductal Carcinoma - IDC.  The tumor was the size of the tip of my pinky finger.

When faced with the difficult decisions about the course of my treatment, the team of doctors suggested I receive a second, and even third opinion.  I am truly grateful for their supportive understanding.

At the same time, I discovered the book Your Life in Your Hands:  Understanding, Preventing, and Overcoming Breast Cancer by Jane Plant.  (Excerpt: Dr. Plant had five recurrences of breast cancer and, after being given three months to live,  “she used her extensive research experience and knowledge and became convinced that there was a causal link between consumption of dairy products and breast cancer…[in her book] women [are] presented for the first time with a compelling body of evidence strongly suggesting that consumption of dairy products may cause breast cancer.”)

I learned that only 11 out of every 100,000 women in rural China experiences breast cancer during her lifetime*, eating a diet that is virtually dairy-free.  In China, breast cancer is referred to as "the rich women's disease." By changing my diet to one with NO dairy products EVER (besides organic eggs)**, very limited amounts of hormone-free meat, and several other life style changes, I believe I have prevented a recurrence.

When I'm not blogging about the American diet and the host of diseases related to it, I manage our family of five, along with a three-year-old Labrador retriever from a shelter, and several uninvited mice that have taken up residence for the winter (again).

I've been encouraged to share my stories, resources and recipes. This Winter we will be airing The SuperMom101 Show where I share delicious and nutritious dairy-free recipes that even most toddlers to teenagers will enjoy, along with household tips that are chemical free, and introduce you to others that have changed “what’s on their plate.”

Since National Cancer Institute research shows that as much as 50% of cancer risk may be related to diet, my hope is that 50% of the cancer research dollars go to nutrition research and cancer prevention.  So, please think before you pink!!

I’d love to hear "what’s on your plate."

Best health always,

SuperMom101

p.s. I've been asked how I came up with the SuperMom101 name and my husband even asked, "what makes you think you're a SuperMom?"  My response, "I'm a SuperMom-in-training and it was a bunch of teenagers that gave me the idea of 101 - since I'm a beginner SuperMom."
